Greenland
The Northern Frontier

Greenland is the largest island in the world with a land mass of over 836.000 square miles and amazingly a population of just over 56.000. Greenland is located northeast of the U.S. and close to the east coast of Canada. Greenland is famous for its magnificent scenery, pure fresh air, Inuit culture, Arctic wildlife and enormous icebergs. The small coastal towns are filled with charming multi-colored houses and the imposing silence can be deafening.
Even with the Arctic climate the temperatures in the summer can reach as high as 70 degrees. This combined with 24 hour sunlight from late May till late July, will offer you enough impressions to last you a lifetime.

Starting in June, AIR GREENLAND will again offer direct service from Baltimore to Kangerlussuaq, on the west coast of Greenland. In just 5 hours, you can reach this Northern Frontier, now more accessible than ever from the U.S.
Air Greenland will offer weekly flights on Thursdays from June 26 - August 21. It is a short same-day flight on modern Boeing or Airbus jets.

We also continue to recommend the new Norwegian Coastal Voyage ship “MS Fram” offering Expedition Voyages to the west coast of Greenland from late May though late August. This allows another way to explore this amazing destination!.

Some of the main cities on the west coast are Ilulissat, Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut and Nuuk.
Ilulissat - "Town of Icebergs" in Inuit - with close to 5.000 inhabitants, is a modern town with its main focus on fishing in the clear waters of the Disco Bay. Big trawlers are netting shrimp while the local fishermen catch halibut on long lines in between the 300 foot high icebergs. The traditional hunting economy is still alive in the villages where life goes on like decades ago, in the spectacular Arctic nature. Sailing in between the icebergs, walking along the coast of the Ice Fjord and the Disco Bay or a helicopter tour to the Ice Cap are all experiences "out of this world".

Kangerlussuaq - "The Great Fjord" in Inuit - is a former U.S. airbase and is situated inland, further south, just above the Arctic Circle and is home to just 500 people. It is next to the third largest fjord in the world and just 15 miles from the edge of the Ice Cap, and is a fertile oasis in the Arctic enviroment. Here you will find unique wildlife including over 5.000 musk oxen, Arctic fox, reindeer, falcons and even eagles.

Sisiniut - "Inhabitants by the Fox Burrows" in Inuit - is located on the coast, a short flight due west of Kangerlusuaq, and has around 5.000 inhabitants. The town landmark is a 2400 foot high mountain, which after a good hike is allowing amazing views of the area. Besides excellent hiking options this area is famous for their angling and Mineral Museum.

Nuuk - "The Promontory" in Inuit - is the capital of Greenland and with its population of 13.500 it is the largest city in Greenland and is located south of the Arctic Circle on the coast at the mouth of Nuuk Fjord. Here you can visit an open-air market and explore exhibits on sealing, kayaking at the National Museum. Restaurants here offer an adventure of Greenland fare from traditional halibut or musk ox and caribou stew to fusion dishes that mix cutting edge culinary arts with local ingredients.
