Iceland Grand Circle 2008, 12 days/11 nights

Type of car recommended: Nr. 2 (Compact) and higher.

Day: 1 Arrival at Keflavik Airport. Transfer on own from Keflavík airport to accommodation in Reykjavík. Recommend that you take scheduled Flybus to city center/hotel.

Day 2: Drive to Þingvellir National Park, then continue to the famous Geysir hot-spring area and the Gullfoss waterfall.

Day 3: Travel along the south shore, viewing Skógafoss waterfall, Mýrdalsjökull glacier, Vík, and Dyrhólaey.

- Skógar folk museum $call P.P.

Day 4: Visit the beautiful Skaftafell National Park and the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón. Onwards to the Höfn/Djúpivogur area.

Day 5: Drive along the rugged varied coastline of the East Fjords with their towering mountains and charming fishing villages. On the way there is an option of taking a boat tour to Papey island where thousands of puffins nest in summer or visit the famous stone collection of Petra at Stöðvarfjörður.

Day 6: Across the Möðrudalsöræfi highlands to Dettifoss, the mightiest waterfall in Europe, to Ásbyrgi in Jökulsárgljúfur National Park and on to Húsavík.

Day 7: Explore highlights of the Lake Mývatn area, like Dimmuborgir, the pseudocraters at Skútustaðir, Námaskarð and Krafla. Onwards to Akureyri.

Day 8: Spend the day exploring Akureyri, the capital of the North and the surrounding area.

Day 9: Travel to the horse-breeding valleys of Skagafjörður fjord and then continue to the shores of Húnaflói bay, an area full of history.
Optional:

Day 10: Explore Dalir, the region of Eirík the Red, before continuing to Snæfellsnes peninsula and National Park.

Day 11: In Borgarfjörður area visit such highlights as Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls, Reykholt and the hot spring Deildartunguhver. Continue via Hvalfjörður fjord to Reykjavík, end the journey at the Blue Lagoon.
